Mattress Recycling
As your Trusted + Proven + Essential environmental partner, Mt. Diablo Resource Recovery is deeply committed to maximizing recycling and minimizing landfilling. One of the critical areas we have focused on for years is mattress recycling—an initiative that saves landfill space and ensures that 80-90 percent of mattress parts are recycled and repurposed.
Mattress Recycle
Mattress recycling is an essential component of resource recovery. By reprocessing materials, we significantly reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills, mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, and conserve natural resources. Our process aligns with environmental sustainability goals and contributes to a circular economy, where products and materials are recycled and reused, extending their lifecycle and reducing our carbon footprint.
Nearly 180,000 Pounds Diverted in 2023!
We don’t sleep on mattress recycling. The mattresses collected are diverted, broken down, and turned into carpet padding, mulch, and textiles. Sleep easy at night knowing that 80-90% of your mattresses are recycled or repurposed when you partner with us!

What Happens Next?
Upon arrival at our facility, our team pulls the mattresses + box springs from self-hauls, bulk item collections, or debris box rentals. Our team segregates the items to a special holding area. In the storage phase, mattresses are kept in a large, designated area until they’re ready to be loaded for transport. This step utilizes a 51ft cargo trailer optimized for space and safety, marking the move towards the recycling and resource extraction phase.
Once the cargo trailer is full, our mattress recycling partner takes over. As experts in the mattress recycling industry since 1999, they have the necessary facilities and equipment to dismantle the mattresses and extract reusable resources.
The Mattress + Boxspring Recycling Process
Our mattress recycling partner carefully dissects each piece, ensuring that the components are segregated and prepared for recycling into bales. When breaking down a mattress or box spring, recycling involves separating its four key elements: steel, foam, cotton, and wood. Each component has the potential for a second life through recycling.
- Steel undergoes a transformation where it melts down and reshapes into new products.
- Foam is processed into small pieces and is repurposed into padding for carpets.
- Cotton is used as an insulation material, contributing to energy efficiency.
- Wood is either composted to enrich soil or utilized as biomass fuel, offering a sustainable energy source.
