Materials Recovery Facility
The Most Advanced Technology in the Region
Spanning 90,000 square feet, our recycling facility is Contra Costa County’s most expansive establishment, playing home to Big Blue 2.0, our state-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). Big Blue 2.0 is engineered with cutting-edge technology, enabling it to process an impressive 600,000 pounds of material daily. This high-capacity processing goes a long way in maximizing recycling efforts while drastically minimizing waste sent to landfills. By processing and sorting a more comprehensive range of materials at an accelerated pace, we ensure that the East Bay remains a leader in environmental conservation.
Processing Capacity to Over 35 Tons per Hour
Originally launched in 2009, our MRF has undergone significant upgrades. The 2021 retrofit transformed its capabilities, boosting its processing capacity from 20 tons per hour to over 35 tons. This enhancement not only expands our operational scope but also reinforces our commitment to sustainability.
Cutting Edge Materials Recovery Facility
Significant enhancements in design, process upgrades, and the incorporation of pioneering equipment mark our MRF’s transformation. The retrofit includes the integration of advanced BHS Tri-Disc screens, National Recovery Technology (NRT) optical sorters, Eddy current separators, and compression balers.
Expansive Recycling Services Across the East Bay
Our facility provides services to a wide range of homes and businesses across Concord, Pittsburg, Oakley, Rio Vista, and the unincorporated areas of Bay Point, Bethel Island, Knightsen, and Brentwood. Through a strategic partnership with RecycleSmart, the Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority, we also process the recyclables collected from residences and businesses in Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda, Walnut Creek, and the unincorporated areas of Alamo, Blackhawk, and Diablo. This area includes suburban, industrial, and rural areas and represents diverse lifestyles and community structures. Our commitment to serving diverse community needs across various geographic and demographic landscapes makes us a cornerstone of regional recycling efforts.
